know your English

...from the Bill Frist backed Immigration Bill:

Those who have lived in the country at least five years would be put on a path toward guaranteed citizenship, provided that they remained employed, paid fines and back taxes, and learned English, a senior Republican aide said. The aide said this group accounted for about 7 million of the roughly 11 million illegal immigrants believed to be living here.

I have lived enough of my life in Los Angeles and Miami to know that people manage just fine without speaking the "native" language. Indeed, this very group has apparently managed for 5 or more years. I have dozens of students right now with poor command of spoken English, and they are getting Masters degrees.

Spoken English is not a guarantee of success in America, it is not even a prerequisite. Thousands of English speakers were so poor that they couldn't clear the path of a catastrophic hurricane.

Does this mean we could revoke the citizenship of those who can't write the language correctly? If so, do you think Bill Frist has tried to read the Lubbock newspaper lately?
